Upper eyelid surgery: The upper eyelid incision is made in the natural skin fold. Excess skin and fatty tissue is removed, the muscles and orbital septum (a thin connective tissue membrane) may be tightened, and the incisions are carefully closed. The external incisions are hidden within the natural fold of the upper eyelids. Much of the operation is done with a very fine electrocautery, which controls any bleeding. The skin is then closed with very fine sutures. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty generally takes about one to three hours to complete, depending on the technique used and the extent of the repair.
Facelift: A face lift can be done in the hospital or in an office surgical suite, depending on your preferences as well as your surgeon's. It may be performed under local anesthesia with light sedation, local anesthesia and deep sedation, or general anesthesia. The longer the procedure is expected to take, the more likely that general anesthesia will be recommended. You may be allowed to return home within a few hours of the surgery, and spend the night in the comfort of your own home, or it may be necessary to spend the night in the hospital so your recovery process can be monitored by a medical staff. A facelift takes an average of two to three hours and can be performed using either a local or general anesthesia. Preferences will be discussed with your cosmetic surgeon during your consultation. Facelift surgery generally requires a few hours to perform, depending upon the complexity of the condition and the desired results.
Nose Surgery: Rhinoplasty can be performed under a general anesthetic or with local anesthetic, depending on what you and your surgeon prefer. Incisions are made inside the rim of the nostrils. Sometimes, tiny, inconspicuous incisions are also made on the rim of the nose. Soft tissues of the nose are then separated from the underlying structures, and the cartilage and bone causing the deformity are reshaped. The exact nature of that sculpting depends on your particular problem, and should be discussed at the consultation. If the nose is being reduced in size, the nasal bones are carefully fractured toward the conclusion of the procedure. Breathing problems may be improved by a procedure called septoplasty , in which the obstructions are removed. Another type of soft-tissue surgery, alar narrowing, is used to adjust the width of the nostrils. There are two major ways to perform a rhinoplasty: the closed rhinoplasty and the open rhinoplasty technique. The open technique includes an incision across the colummella, the small skin between the two nostrils. One major advantage of this technique is the ability to completely visualize the internal structures of the nose, and place sutures precisely where they may be required. With this type of rhinoplasty, the swelling takes significantly longer to subside and some of the tissues may be unnecessarily disrupted. The scar is most often quite small and fades rapidly. The closed technique does not require an external incision, heals more quickly and does not disturb the tissues as much as the open technique.
Breast augmentation: Breast augmentation consists of making an incision, lifting the breast tissue, creating a pocket in the chest/breast area, and placing an envelope containing a soft, natural feeling implant material underneath (breast implant).
An incision may be made in any one of the following places: the crease below the breast, around the areola, under the armpit, or, very rarely, through the navel.
The breast implants can be placed either under the chest muscle or directly under the breasts. Placement considerations include the anatomy of your breasts, soreness after surgery, exercise activities (upper body strength and conditioning sports such as weightlifting, tennis, volleyball and others) and interference with mammograms.
Although several breast implants are available at the present time, the implant being used for nearly all breast augmentation surgeries are saline breast implants . These breast implants are made of a silicone rubber sack filled with a saline solution. Under certain conditions, such as reconstructive surgery, silicone breast implants can be used instead. Silicone gel filled implants are only offered on a limited basis, under approved studies, due to questions about silicone implants correlated to autoimmune diseases.
Laser Hair Removal:
The initial consultation: Your doctor will advise you on what to expect from laser treatment. He/she will explain the different options available to you, the procedure itself, and its risks and limitations. Test patches may be performed to determine whether your hair will respond favorably to the laser. If you have dark skin, you may be asked to use a bleaching cream on the area to be treated to help focus the laser's energy on the hair follicle instead of on your skin.
The treatment: The area to be treated will be shaved clean and an anesthetic cream will be applied to minimize discomfort. During the procedure you'll feel intense emissions of light on the skin as the laser is absorbed by the hair follicles. Each pulse of the laser lasts a fraction of a second and treats an area of approximately ½ inch. Many lasers are equipped with cooling systems to decrease skin temperature, providing an additional mild anesthetic and preventing burns from the heat generated by the laser.
